To be introduced to the concepts of patient assessment and treatment in the search and rescue setting.
Objectives:
By the end of the medical practice the student will be able to:
(1) Perform a general and focused patient assessment
(2) Obtain vital signs (respiratory rate, heart rate, and blood pressure)
(3) Auscultate normal breath sounds
(4) Place a patient in cervical spine immobilization
(5) Discuss the critical concepts of cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED)
(6) Perform chest compressions on a mannequin
(7) Correctly ventilate an appropriate mannequin with a bag valve mask (BVM)
(8) Place a patient in an immobilization vest(s) (LSP half-back, KED)
(9) Perform various splinting (vacuum, SAM, etc.) and bandaging (sling, pressure, etc.) techniques
(10) Discuss various airway management techniques
(11) Discuss airway adjuncts
Correctly place an oral-pharyngeal and naso-pharyngeal airway into a mannequin
(12) Suction a patient with a portable suction device
(13) Discuss assessment and treatment for selected case studies

0800-0830: Introductions and Overview
0830-1230: Station Rotation
Stations will be 50 minutes each (e.g. 0830-0920). There
will be a 10 minute break between each station.
Station I: Patient Assessment
Station II: C-spine immobilization
Station III: Splinting and Bandaging
Station IV: Airway Management
1230-1330: Lunch on your own
1330-1730: Station Rotation
Stations will be 50 minutes each (e.g. 1330-1420). There
will be a 10 minute break between each station.
Station V: Patient Scenarios
Station VI: C-spine immobilization with SAR equipment
Station VII: splinting and bandaging with SAR equipment
Station VIII: CPR and AED/Ambulance Orientation
1730-1745: Wrap up
